The South Kansas Symphony, Inc. (SKS) continues its 2024-25 season on Sunday, March 3 with Artist in our Midst, highlighting local percussionist Jeremy Kirk. The performance will be at 3pm in Richardson Performing Arts Center (RPAC) at Southwestern College, inside Christy Administration Building, and is sponsored by Dr. Bryan & Debbie Dennett.
“We have a wide range of music that’s really fun; everything from classic symphonies all the way to music that sounds like movie film scores,” shares Michael Christensen, conductor. “One thing we wanted to do with this performance was to feature the artists that are right here in our hometown. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to see Jeremy play the most famous, most widely-played marimba concerto along with the South Kansas Symphony.”
The performance will begin with “Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage” by Felix Mendelssohn, “Tatarian Dances” by Elena Roussanova Lucas, and “Millennium” by Richard Meyer, capped off by the feature performance of Ney Rosauro’s “Concerto No. 1 for Marimba” performed by Kirk.
“It’s a really unique opportunity to see an instrument that we normally don’t get to see with a symphony orchestra. Not too often do we get to see the marimba, even less often do we get to see it as a featured instrument as an equal partner with the string instruments that we would usually see in a concerto,” Kirk noted.
Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at southkansassymphony.org or at the RPAC Box Office before the performance. Children under 12 years of age are free with an adult, and Southwestern College, Cowley College, and PreK-12 students, staff, and faculty may attend for free with their school ID.
Southwestern College is also providing an on-campus shuttle service for the performance. Concert attendees may park in the Keyhole Drive (bottom of 77 steps), the ADA parking area east of Stewart Field House, or the parking area east of the White PE Building/Indoor Swimming Pool. A bus will pick up guests before the performance and return guests to their cars afterward.
Members of the symphony include Southwestern College and Cowley College students and alumni, community members, and high school students. They represent Winfield, Arkansas City, and surrounding communities like Belle Plaine, Derby, Dexter, Wellington, and Wichita.
